At Pets and their People, Wayville Animal Hospital and Fulham Gardens Animal Hospital are VSBSA accredited Hospitals after a huge effort in the last 2 years we have been awarded ASAV Hospital of Excellence Accreditation (recognised as the highest standard of hospital accreditation in Australia). Due to physical constraints Unley Vet Surgery cannot become an accredited hospital but still operates with all the same hospital level standards and procedures.

Hospital accreditation requires increased investment in equipment, staffing levels to provide the highest levels of patient care, investment in ongoing training, systems and infrastructure. Veterinary hospitals have higher cost to run.

The Veterinary Surgeons Board of South Australia recognises this and as such “Hospital” is a protected term – you can only use it if you are accredited. No other names (Clinic, Surgery, Centre) require any form of accreditation.

By providing the highest standards of care we maximise the chances of better outcomes for your pets.

We think your pets are worth it.

We know that not everyone can afford the best when it comes to treatment plans, and that’s OK. If you are dealing with you own financial pressures, please work with us to find the best way to take care of you and your pet. If you do decide to go to another practice, in search of a cheaper option, that’s OK too. Please do so without lashing out at our team - it has serious cumulative negative impacts our industry’s mental health.

The veterinary industry now has amongst the highest mental health and suicide rates of any profession. Four times higher than average. This is a complex problem but some of the factors indicated in the root causes are unreasonable conflict with clients, unreasonable workload expectations and poor pay.

This is resulting in an enormous attrition from the veterinary industry – recent studies have shown that nearly 30% of vets are looking at changing jobs in the next 12 month in search of a better place to work. 25% are considering leaving general practice all together in the next 12 months. Many veterinary practices in Australia are understaffed as there are not enough veterinarians to fill the available roles. There is a documented worldwide shortage of veterinarians and increasing pressures on support staff.

The veterinary industry has for years suffered with low and stagnant wages. Far below what many people believe that that our profession earns. After 5-6 year university degree with one of the highest entry scores veterinarians live with one of the lowest professional salaries, many times lower that other similarly qualified professionals. In fact, many vets’ salaries are below the Australian Average Salary. As an industry we have accepted this due to our love for animals and our desire to take care of them.

To keep prices down our industry has worked harder and done more and more unpaid overtime to make ends meet

At Pets and their People, we believe our people need to be taken care of. Without taking care of our team members, we will lose them from our team and possibly from the industry.

For years we have worked on providing a great place to work, an environment where people thrive and to incrementally improve wages to try over time to correct decades of underpayment in the industry. I am incredibly proud of what our team has achieved.

The onset of covid and the change in lifestyle and priorities of pet owners has seen an unprecedented surge for demand for veterinary services across Australia, and I presume globally. There are just not enough vets to do the work. This is putting more strain on already stressed systems across the country.

Covid and inflation have increased pressures and driven costs up.

We are doing all this because our team are worth it.

We choose to be upfront with our pricing. Not to provide loss leader discounts to attract you in and the recoup costs elsewhere. We believe in a fairly sharing the costs.

We understand that price rise may have an impact on you and we are happy to work with you where we can. However if we do not look after our people, and pay for the cost of providing hospital standard of care…there won’t be anyone left to do it and in the long run… your pets won’t be able to get the care they need.

Thank you for your support and understanding.
